Even with the release of Oracle 18C, this book is still valuable. My main concern with this book is that it gives the wrong impression about Oracle Database Tuning. This should not be the first book for someone learning about Oracle Database Tuning.The features discussed in this book are still in Oracle 18C. This book covers most of the performance tuning options available. With the coverage of the X$ views, this book is of value to the advanced performance tuner.My problem with the book is that it gives the impression that adjusting database parameters can fix performance problems. This is the last thing one should be doing. Unfortunately, people start at the Oracle database instance because of the wealth of performance information and tools available.One tunes according to a methodology. The one I use is based on wait event analysis (see Optimizing Oracle Performance: A Practitioner's Guide to Optimizing Response Time). This approach is customer-focused: where and why are they experiencing pain, Not on why is the database instance performing badly.
Some of this book is current and excellent (worth the purchase alone). Other sections are out of date, and must have come from a previous version and no longer necessarily apply (SAME Technology written 20 years ago - think SSDs). And still other sections are just wrong (I paraphrase "DBAs that use ASM are using Automatic Memory Management" - nope not true today for any Oracle Linux database of medium or greater memory footprint - you have to use Huge Pages which is not compatible with AMM).Despite it's short comings (nothing is perfect) the shear volume of info that is applicable is well worth the price.
This book performance topics that can hardly be found together in a single book. The explanation is clear and straight forward.I wish they made it clear where to download the code script used in the book.
I have had the pleasure to work with an Oracle Evangelist like Rich when I was part of ROLTA TUSC in Lombard IL a few years ago. Lovely group with the best of the best the industry can offer. Another gem rolled out with complete coverage on 12c. I highly recommend this book.

This book is awesome . helped me tune real time mission critical systems. . Only drawback is that I could not find way to download the scripts given in chapters. .
This book was exactly what I needed when upgrading to 12cR2.Excellent content and detail Rich! A must have for all DBA's.
Well worth the price. Niemiec puts out another masterpiece.
